Pakistan's military says insurgents have freed four people, including an army officer who was abducted three days ago when he was sitting in a mosque in a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban to receive mourners after attending his father’s funeral. In a statement, the military said the “unconditional release” of Lt. Col. Khalid Ameer and three of his relatives was secured on Saturday due to the role played by tribal elders. Though no one claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s kidnappings in northwest Pakistan, hours after his abduction, Ameer in a video said that they were in the custody of the Pakistani Taliban.

Brendan Donovan hit a three-run homer, Kyle Gibson pitched seven strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees 6-5 for their first regular-season win at Yankee Stadium. It was the first victory for St. Louis in the Bronx since Tim McCarver hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning in Game 5 of the 1964 World Series and Bob Gibson pitched a complete game in a 5-2 win. The Cardinals improved to 1-7 at Yankee Stadium in the regular season. St. Louis went ahead to stay with four runs in the third against rookie Will Warren.

This weekend’s gathering of Moms for Liberty has showcased how the group has moved toward fully embracing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his political messaging as November’s election draws closer. The group is officially a nonpartisan nonprofit that says it’s open to anyone who wants parents to have a greater say in their children’s education, yet there was little pretense about which side of the nation’s political divide it has chosen. The group’s co-founder, Tiffany Justice, urged members to “fight like a mother” against the Democratic presidential ticket. She and other founders wrote an open letter to parents warning that a Kamala Harris presidency would be “the most anti-parent, extremist government America has ever known.”

Diego Pavia scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in overtime as Vanderbilt upset Virginia Tech 34-27 in the season opener for both teams with the Commodores rallying after blowing a 17-point lead. The graduate transfer from New Mexico State and the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year needed four plays to put the Commodores ahead in overtime. Virginia Tech tried switching up quarterbacks in OT. Collin Schlee came in on a sweltering day when Kyron Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns. Schlee was sacked on third down. His fourth-down throw went out of the back of the end zone to start Vanderbilt's big celebration.

Blake Horvath threw two touchdowns passes, Eli Heidenreich caught two for scores and Navy opened its season with a 49-21 win over FCS Bucknell on Saturday. Braxton Woodson also saw action at quarterback and threw for one touchdown and ran for another. The QBs combined to go 10 of 19 for 173 yards, the three TDs and two interceptions. Ralph Rucker IV, who set a Bison record last year by throwing for 2,537 yards, was 11 of 24 for 122 yards and a score. TJ Cadden made five catches for 97 yards.

A small plane has crashed Saturday morning east of Portland. The Federal Aviation Administration says it was a twin-engine Cessna 421C that crashed around 10:30 a.m. near Troutdale Airport. Authorities say it wasn’t immediately clear how many people were on board. Photos of the crash site published by KPTV-TV in Portland show a home heavily engulfed in flames. Oregon Public Broadcasting is reporting that the plane crashed in a neighborhood in the city of Fairview. That is about a 30-minute drive east of Portland.

Vice President Kamala Harris erased most of Donald Trump’s lead among likely voters in Michigan in a new poll, the latest evidence that the Democratic nominee is closing the gap in the presidential race.

Billy Edwards Jr. threw two touchdown passes to Tai Felton, and Maryland’s defense was as good as advertised in a 50-7 victory over UConn. The big question facing the Terrapins this season is how they’ll do without Taulia Tagovailoa, who brought them some rare stability at quarterback for the last four years. Cade McNamara threw three second-half touchdown passes and No. 25 Iowa cruised to a season-opening victory without coach Kirk Ferentz, pounding Illinois State 40-0. Ferentz served a one-game suspension imposed by the university for a recruiting contact violation that is under investigation by the NCAA. Assistant coach Seth Wallace ran the team in his absence. It was the first game Ferentz had missed in his 26 seasons as the Hawkeyes’ coach. Kaleb Johnson rushed for 119 yards, including touchdown runs of 64 and 18 yards in the fourth quarter.

Gavin Lochow caught a touchdown pass and threw for another and the Dayton defense forced turnovers on the last three possessions as the Flyers opened the season with an 18-10 win over St. Francis (Pa.). Lochow hauled in a 12-yard pass from Drew VanVleet to cap an 11-play, 28-yard drive on the Flyers’ first possession. That score was set up by Gideon Lampron’s strip sack of Nick Whitfield Jr. and fumble recovery. Lampron led the defense for Dayton with 11 tackles, three for losses, and forced two fumbles. Tyler Shough passed for four touchdowns in his Louisville debut, freshman Isaac Brown added a 77-yard scoring run and the Cardinals scored on six of their first seven possessions to overwhelm Austin Peay 62-0 in Saturday’s season opener for both teams. Louisville flexed its muscle right away against the FCS Governors and never let up in the inaugural meeting between the schools. Shough passed for 232 yards in two quarters, and his TD total tied Browning Nagle for the best starting debut for a Louisville QB. The Cardinals outgained the Governors 571-106 while holding them to 34 yards rushing and recording seven sacks.

Carson Beck threw for 278 yards, including a pair of touchdowns, and No. 1 Georgia opened the season by stifling 14th-ranked Clemson 34-3. Hudson Card was nearly perfect in leading Purdue to a 49-0 romp over Indiana State in Saturday’s season opener for both teams. Card connected on 24 of 25 passes, including his final 17 in a row, for 273 yards and four touchdown passes before leaving in the third quarter.

Jake Cady threw for three touchdowns, Damien Mazil added 135 yards passing and another touchdown, and Wagner eased by Virginia Lynchburg 46-7 on Saturday for the Seahawks’ first season-opening win since 2018. Wagner scored on the second play from scrimmage and cruised from there. Jaylen Bonelli made a 20-yard touchdown grab on fourth down for a 14-0 lead, and Wagner added a safety and a field goal later in the first quarter for a 19-0 lead. After Virginia Lynchburg pulled within 19-7, Cady led Wagner on two straight scoring drives. He connected with Bonelli from 28-yards out and Sekou Kamau from the 4 for a 32-7 halftime lead. Cady added a 32-yard connection with Teree McDonald in the third.

Josh Berry thought his car and safety systems did their job in a frightening crash at Daytona last week where he walked away largely unharmed and came to race at Darlington. Berry's No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford flipped on his roof and slid into an inside wall. Berry came away with two small bruises from the seatbelts and felt good enough to run in the Southern 500 on Sunday night.

The 53-year-old artist topped charts in Europe with “Be Faithful” two decades ago and later contributed to hits by Missy Elliott and other artists. The cause of his death isn't immediately clear. The mayor of the town of Hamden says he had a medical emergency while performing at a park there, and concertgoers and paramedics tried to aid him. He was taken to a hospital. His family calls him “a radiant soul” in an Instagram post Saturday confirming his death. The New York-born rapper broke out with 1999’s “Be Faithful.” It took off in Europe with a 2003 re-release, hitting No. 1 on the singles charts in the U.K. and Ireland.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is suing the North Carolina State Board of Elections. The lawsuit filed in state court Friday accuses the board of violating his free speech rights by denying his request to get his name removed from state ballots. The board's executive director said more than 1.7 million ballots were already printed to meet a legal deadline, and re-doing them could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Kennedy suspended his third-party campaign and endorsed Republican Donald Trump. He's tried since then to get off ballots in states where Trump's race against Democrat Kamala Harris could be close.

The Kiwis’ shore crew worked around the clock to cut out and replace a piece of the hull of the 75-footer named “Taihoro” that was dinged up on Thursday. The boat dropped onto the support cradle. Team boss Grant Dalton initially feared the boat could be in the shed for several days. But the damage turned out to be less than originally feared and the defending champion's boat was out of action only one day.

Jasmine Paolini has joined Coco Gauff as the only women to reach at least the fourth round at every Grand Slam tournament in 2024. Paolini got that far at the U.S. Open for the first time with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 30 seed Yulia Putintseva on Saturday. The fifth-seeded Paolini had never made it past the second round in 16 appearances at majors entering this season. But she reached the fourth round at the Australian Open in January, before being the runner-up at both the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July. That’s when the 27-year-old center shot 65% from the field during the regular season. He averaged 16.2 points in the Clippers’ loss to Dallas over six games of the Western Conference playoffs. Zubac had one year and $11.7 million remaining on his current deal. He is the longest tenured player on the roster as the team prepares to play its first season in its new arena in Inglewood.

A politically active western New York businessman has admitted to a multimillion-dollar pandemic loan fraud, and prosecutors have said some of the money went to the Democrat’s campaign coffer for an unsuccessful bid for a county office. Court records show Hormoz Mansouri pleaded guilty Friday to federal bank fraud and fraud conspiracy charges. The Buffalo News says he admitted in court that he inflated his businesses’ payroll costs and employee numbers on federal pandemic relief loans applications. The engineering-business owner sought the Democratic nomination for Erie County comptroller in 2021. According to his indictment, Mansouri reaped about $3 million in all from the pandemic loan fraud scheme, and $200,000 of it went to his campaign account.
